Message from a reader:

Gigi is a remarkably perceptive person who shares her love for traveling.  I become so immersed in reading her travel journals that I find myself on an imaginary voyage to places I never seen.  Her stories go beyond describing the niceties of places she visited by conveying interactions and reactions along the way.  I get a good idea what to expect if I were to take the same journey.  Thanks for sharing Gigi.

People travel for different reasons. Some travel for business, others for pleasure. Still, others travel to find their inner self. Some, however, find traveling therapeutic especially when not much cash is involved.

As for me, I get to smell fresh lovely flowers; hear the birds chirp in harmony; feel the calm breeze by the sea; taste an exquisite street food or touch a grand artifact from somewhere else - all for priceless moments.

In other words, I view traveling as a get-away from life’s daily routines.

What do I bring along with me on the road?

I travel with an open mind; a tough stomach and keen eyesight.

In this journal, you will not only read the captivating journeys of life but you will also be in awe of the wonderful places taken along the way.

Enjoy!

November in Guatemala

The very moment I stepped out of the La Aurora International Airport (GUA), I couldn’t help but compare Guatemala to the Philippines with their Ninoy Aquino International Airport-like crowded arrival area. But the arrival line is less intimidating and noise-controlled in LAIA unlike in Manila's NAIA. As I look out the window in one of my Guatemala City trips, I encountered images of nostalgia: the Romanesque-baroquely structured buildings; the humongous-looking billboard ads along the roads; the iron-gated or colorfully-walled residences and establishments; the Sagada-like wind breeze, the fully-supplied tienda, the city itself and everything else, is just like home away from home. As I closed my eyes, I could only dream of coming home again until I heard someone say, “Buenos!”

A migrant’s inner thoughts

Here are some of the personal things I observed as a migrant in the US:

  • Americans tend to wait for you while opening the door when you enter or exit. Salamat!
  • Americans tend to be apologetic when they see that they block your way or get in your way. Excuse me …
  • Most entrance and exit doors are quite heavy to push or pull. Sa sobrang bigat akala mo di gumagana …
  • If you live in the east coast, it is a must that you know how to drive; except if you live within Washington, DC, New York City and New Jersey, where public transportation is easily accessible. But the rides are scheduled here and there are specified stop areas. Hindi puede dito ang basta-basta na lang sumakay at bumaba kung saan mo gusto …
